Located 17 km southeast of Porto de Mos, the Mira de Aire caves were discovered in 1947. The caves are one of the 7 Wonders of Portugal The entrance is at an altitude of 300 metres, but inside you descend 120 metres into tunnels and walkways around subterranean lakes. The caves were formed in the middle Jurassic age about 150 million years ago, in the days of dinosaurs, whose footprints can be seen in the area. The features have names such as ‘The Jewel Room’, ‘Jellyfish’, ‘The Martian’, ‘Chinese Hat’, and ‘Organ’. The ‘Black River’ descends in a waterfall to the ‘Great Lake’, where a theatrical sound and light show takes place.
